THE 3I0KXIXG OREGOXIAX, MONDAY, APRIL 25, 1921 ft.CXriTTED PRINCIPAL IS DE FENDED .VXD CRITICISED. 119 Citizens of Cascade Lock Ap peal to Opponents to Stop "Per eccullns' J. H. Dunn. HOOD RIVER. Or.. April 24. (Spe cial.) Factionalism in Cascade Locks resulting recently when the school board there reinstated J. H. Dunn as principal of the school following his acquittal by a Jury in circuit court here of a statutory charge involving a Kirl student continues. An element of the highway town sought Mr. Dunn's removal through an appeal to J. A. Churchill, state superintendent of pub lic instruction. The latter declined to interfere, declaring that - the local school board was supreme. On the heels of the appeal to Mr. Churchill the following appeared in local news papers as an advertisement: "We. the undersigned citizens of Cascade Locks consider the persistent persecution of Mr. and Mrs. j. H. Dunn s unwarranted. un-Christian and un .menus a and do most earnestly ask those ejtB?ed in it to ato" s V peal was signed by 119. A communi cation denying persecution was pub lished in response, to the. charge. Twenty-eight citizens signed: the lat ter document, which follows: "Referring to the advertisement, Persecutors of Mr. and Mrs. Dunn,' we wish to say that if this were taken at Its face value it would not merit a reply or notice of any kind, as there Is no persecution here of Mr. and Mrs. Dunn or anyone else. But if! this advertisement refers to the hon est and sincere efforts on the. part of self-respecting and conscientious citi xens to clean up a condition which, as is well known to many signers of said advertisement, is not creditable to this community, then "We, as representatives of a ma jority of the people of this school dis trict, strenously objeat to our efforts in this direction being termed un neighborly, un-Christian and, un American, and will state that our sense of duty toward ourselves and fellow citizens will not permit us to cease in our efforts until our school district can again claim the right to be classed with other self-respecting communities of our state." !. V. W. RETRIAL IN DOUBT So Decision 3Iade Since Sentences of 5 Xlare Been Set Aside. TAKIMA, Wash.. April 24. No de ds'on as to retrial of the cases of the tive I. W. W. prisoners whose sen tences in tbe Yakima superior court under the criminal syndicalism - law have been set aside by the supreme court, can be made until after the text of tbe decision is examined, and the only question so far considered ty the prosecutor is whether a re trial is possible at the present jury term, according to Judsre Holden, pre siding Judge at the former trial. Judge Holden said he bad beard no intimation that the cases would be retried, and was of the opinion tne supreme court's decision would ailect the evidence only slightly.
